As we settle into the fall semester, I’m energized by the enthusiasm and sense of possibility across The Beach. At Convocation, we convened around the theme, “Rising with the Tide: A New Wave of Student Success at The Beach,” and reflected on our shared responsibility to support students through graduation and toward meaningful careers, further study, and the futures they envision for themselves. Now, I invite you to take the next step: add your name to the list of Beach community members committed to putting the CSU Student Success Framework into practice. Each of us contributes to creating the conditions in which our students can learn, grow, and thrive, and I am grateful for the many ways our campus community advances this work. NEWS & UPDATES
Title II accessibility action item: start today!
With the extension of the Title II deadline to April 2027, now is a great time to make sure your courses and uploaded materials are accessible. Get started:
1. Use TidyUp in Canvas to organize your course files.
2. Run UDOIT in Canvas to get your accessibility score and see how to make changes.
3. Learn how to easily create MS Word Documents, PPT presentations, and get videos captioned.
4. Ask the experts to help you fix complex documents:
- Submit a remediation request ticket.
- Connect with ATS through Zoom / Virtual Support for help resolving accessibility issues.
The Beach celebrates HSI Week
CSULB celebrated HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution) Week from September 8-11. Throughout the week, a variety of events brought the Beach community together to connect and learn through activities. Events included a forum and zine activity, research panel, honors webinar, graduate student panel, faculty and staff highlight, and a carne asada. The HSI Week events were a perfect segue as we enter Latine Heritage Month on September 15.
Body Positive at The Beach celebrates 10 years
The Body Positive at The Beach program invites faculty and staff to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. The event will take place at the Anatol Center on Friday, October 23, 2026, from 2:30p.m. - 5p.m. More information will be available soon. Questions can be directed to SHS-BodyPositive@csulb.edu.

Graduate Studies welcomes back Faculty Director Dr. Sara Nourazari
Dr. Nourazari is an Associate Professor in Health Care Management, the Program Director and Graduate Advisor for the M.S. in Health Care Administration, a well-published scholar, and a recipient of multiple grants. Graduate Studies is excited to have Dr. Nourazari back as Faculty Director.
Graduate Studies also thanks Dr. Murdock for her hard work and dedication during spring 2026.

Banned Books Week is Oct 4-10
The University Library is hosting events from September 22 through October 9, including screenings of The Librarians documentary, a Read In, and a Movie Marathon.
Seed Stacks
The Library launches Seed Stacks, a free seed library to expand awareness of gardening resources, encourage sustainable practices, and grow community engagement.

Applications for sought-after graduate programs at The Beach continue to make waves
CSULB graduate programs received 9,756 applications (international: 940) for Fall 2026. Our Master's programs are in high demand and very competitive! Of the 7,618 Master’s applications, only 3,227 were admitted. In all, we welcomed 2,264 new graduate students to The Beach this August!
Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) Faculty Stipend Program
$500 stipend | Applications due: Sept. 25
The AL$ Course Materials Integration Program is designed to guide faculty through open access resources to help discover low-cost learning materials and activities for instruction. Participants will develop an e-portfolio site to share how they've applied these resources in their courses. New this year, faculty can choose from two different tracks:
- The Course Materials Integration Cohort supports individual faculty members who want to redesign a course using affordable learning materials.
- The Course Materials Integration Collaborative supports teams of faculty who teach the same course and want to implement affordable course materials across multiple sections.

Faculty invited to explore pluralism and apply for CSU LIFT Fellowships
All CSULB faculty are invited to attend a two-hour workshop, for which they will be compensated $100, to learn more about pluralism and how it can be applied to their discipline. Faculty who attend this training will be eligible to apply for one of ten $2000 LIFT Fellowships for spring 2027. Selected fellows will work during the spring 2027 semester on either adding a pluralism component to a course or adding a pluralistic perspective to an entire course.
Pluralism is the “energetic engagement with diversity” (Diana Eck) and can be applied across many disciplines. This opportunity is hosted by the Beach Institute for Dialogue and Community and funded by the CSU LIFT program.

Understanding Long Beach’s king tides with CNSM professor
Biological Sciences Professor Dr. Christine Whitcraft recently shared her expertise on Long Beach’s king tides and how rising sea levels and storms are contributing to coastal erosion. As the Paul and Katherine Johansen Endowed Chair for Environmental and Life Sciences, Dr. Whitcraft studies wetland ecology, climate change, and human impacts on coastal ecosystems.

University Honors Program and LB BLAST partnership supports the college pathway
The University Honors Program (UHP) completed its second year partnering with local non-profit Long Beach BLAST to increase impact in K-12 LBUSD schools with a $15,000 service grant. Through UHP, both honors and non-honors CSULB students received a stipend to mentor and tutor local children in 12 local K-12 schools. With support from CSULB students, LB BLAST was able to reach 697 K-12 student mentees, connecting them twice per week with their college mentors.
This partnership increases the college pathway, supports the Long Beach Promise, and encourages local children to consider honors education at the college level. As honors student and LB BLAST mentor, Cynthia Fernandez explains: “I gained insight into what it is like to be an elementary student again. I saw what my mentee was going through and was able to support him in the way he needed it. Being a mentor was impactful because I got to care for someone who is different than me by doing things with him that I wished I could do when I was younger. Helping others can also help you!”
39th CSULB Student Research Competition
The purpose of the Annual Student Research Competition is to showcase excellence in scholarly research, and highlight creative activity conducted by CSULB undergraduate and graduate students. The Student Research Competition will feature oral presentations to an audience of fellow students, university community members, and a jury of distinguished faculty. Join us at the 39th Annual Student Research Competition on February 26, 2027, and cheer on our students as they share their inspiring research and creative ideas. Student proposals are due by December 7 at 11:59p.m.
CSULB nursing students take first step toward the profession
More than 100 nursing students marked an important milestone at CSULB’s White Coat Ceremony, receiving their coats and taking an oath to compassionate, patient-centered care as they begin the clinical phase of their education. The incoming cohort brings a range of personal experiences and motivations to one of the university’s most rigorous programs.

CNSM faculty and students visit the unveiling of Long Beach's newest STEM startup
CSULB faculty, students, and campus leaders joined Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson and other regional leaders for the unveiling of Maglut Heavy Industries, a new Long Beach startup focused on mineral processing. The event highlighted a growing collaboration between Maglut and CSULB, including work with Chemistry Professor Dr. Fangyuan Tian and her students. Hung Family College of Engineering student Brian Vu has already turned an internship with the company into a job while pursuing his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, demonstrating how emerging industry partnerships can create direct career pathways for Beach students.

Dr. Dina Perrone welcomes graduate advisors at orientation
On September 11, new and seasoned Grad Advisors learned the essential tools and resources for supporting incoming and current graduate students at The Beach! The Dean of Graduate Studies, the Faculty Director, and campus partners from Admissions, Enrollment Services, Financial Aid, Student Financial Services, the Center for International Education, the Thesis & Dissertation Office, and the Graduate Center spoke at the Graduate Advisors Orientation.
Undergraduate Research Virtual Information Sessions
The Office of Undergraduate Research Services (OURS) is hosting two virtual info sessions to share about research programs on campus! Join one of our sessions to learn how students can get involved with mentored research, and experience many benefits such as graduate application prep, financial support, priority registration, paid conference travel, and research career learning. Meet five new Beach students ready to make an impact
From aspiring doctors and attorneys to future astrophysicists and entrepreneurs, CSULB’s newest students are arriving at The Beach with ambitious goals and unique paths to higher education. Meet five incoming students—including President’s Scholars, a Division I athlete, and a transfer student returning to college after decades in the workforce—whose stories reflect resilience, curiosity, and a desire to create change.

With the advent of the new academic year, CUMU has an exciting lineup of programming planned around their core topics: economic mobility, regional economic impact, and community well-being. In response to member interest, several of the upcoming events have a special focus on AI and how campuses are navigating these technologies.
